“Shadow ratings” are sometimes used by organizations in their performance management process. Shadow ratings are performance ratings assigned by managers which are not communicated to the employees but are used to calculate rewards and compensation changes. Lack of transparency is a major drawback of this approach, as well as the increased risk of inequity and bias.
