An “API” (application programming interface) is a set of programming code that can enable data transmission and connectivity across different software products. API provides all the information that developers in an organization need to integrate different HR systems and applications with each other. The number of APIs and integrations that a software provider already has available are an important consideration when selecting HR technology for an organization.

API integrations facilitate a seamless flow of data across multiple connection points in an interdependent HR technology ecosystem. For example, information across applications managing time and attendance, accounting, and payroll needs to be unified in one place, and APIs make it possible. APIs act as the glue cementing different HR systems together in the background, helping end users have an integrated technology experience typically through the HR system, which on the frontend serves as the single source of truth for all employee-related information.
