Competency Modeling

“Competency modelling” is a process to establish a competency model—groups of operational, technical, and leadership skills and capabilities into competencies. While competency modelling can be applied to any skills and capabilities, they are usually developed for leadership competencies.

These models are often tested with large employee groups to determine if they differentiate outcomes. Then, the model is documented and embedded in recruiting, learning and development, leadership development, and performance management.

There are many competency models available in the market, and companies have a choice of off-the-shelf or custom-developed models.

In theory, these models are useful for managers and leaders, but often, they are too complicated and hard to maintain, so they get documented and then collect dust on shelves.
